But as the Internet has matured and global communications have grown more widspread in the 2000s, the political borders of nations are making themselves known. This trend became most evident in 2006 with the operation of the Internet in China. Over 111 million Chinese are online, only a fraction of the country's 1.3 billion popluation, but with enough Internet users to be second only to the United States. But in rapidly modernizing China, where for decades the Communist Party has tightly controlled mass communication, the openness of the Internet has led to a clash of cultures. As Washington Post reporter Philip Pan writes, "The party appears at once determined not to be left behind by the global information revolution and fearful of being swept away buy it."

 

As more and more Chinese citizens take to the Internet, an estimated thirty thousand government censors monitor their use of Web pages, blogs, chat rooms, and e-mails. This surveillance constitutes what some now call the "Great Firewall of China." Internet police give warning calls to people posting material critical of the government, force Internet service providers to axe unfavorable blogs, and block thousands of international sites. Many Chinese Internet service providers and Webmasters learn to self-censor to avoid attracting attention. For those who persist in practicing "subversive" free speech, there can be severe penalties: Paris-based Reporters without Borders (www.rsf.org) reports that more than eighty-one cyberdissidents and journalists are in Chinese prisons for writing articles and blogs that criticized the government. Into this regulated environment enter U.S. Internet corporations eager to establish a foothold in the massive Chinese market. Yahoo!, Google, and Microsoft are three of the leading U.S. Internet companies, and they have long promoted the liberating possibilities of the Internet--Google's famous corporate motto even states, "Do no evil."

 

Yet in much-criticized decisions, all three companies are censoring information to appease Chinese authorities. In 2006, Google created a new search engine for the China market, Google.cn, that filters out offending sites, including many relating to Tibetan independence, the Tiananmen Square massacre, the Falun Gong religion, and even BBC News. Moreover, the Google.cn site stripped away e-mail and blog features because they might be used for political protest. According to the Open Net Initiative, Microsoft did much the same, prohibiting the creation of blogs with politically unacceptable titles (such as "freedom of speech," "democracy," and "human rights"), and deleting Chinese MSN Space blogs that criticized the government.

 

Yahoo! censored Web sites on its Chinese-language search portal, too, and also made a controversial decision: assisting Chinese Internet police in linkingcomputer addresses to the owners of Yahoo! e-mail accounts. Yahoo's complicity led to the jailing of at least three cyberdissidents. One of them, journalist Shi Tao, is now serving a ten-year sentance.

 

China isn't the only country to impose borders on the Internet. As the Open Net Initiative reports, the government of Bahrain, Burma, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Tunisia, and the United Arab Emirates are also conducting Internet filtering.

 

While governments may impose virtual borders on the Internet, attempts of any country to block free speech on the medium may ultimately be futile. As major U.S. Internet firms yield to the government's repressive rules, hundreds of thousands of Chinese citizens are bravely evading them, using free services like Hushmail, Freegate, and Ultrasurf (the latter two produced by Chinese immigrants in the United States) to break through China's Great Firewall.

now i'm in the liberary of Washburn. i didn't come here on purpose and i didn't take my camera and digital wires so there won't be any photo updated. sorry about that and i will do it soon.

 

i took off from shanghai on aug 11 and arrived in Chicago on time.

i was exciting and didn't know satan was waiting for me and i did have a hard day of my first day in America.

the line of people waiting for passing the custom was too damn long. before AA288 there was another flight just landed, which i guess was from india because most of the passengers were indians. i got 2 hours before the next filght to Dallas. but it cost me about 1 hour passing through the custom. when i checked out, i was so worried about my next flight and the worse thing was that i just couldn't find my BAGGAGE!!! oh my goodness. i hurried to the Baggage Service and an old black there told me that my baggage would be at Kansas on time and i might probably miss my flight. oh c'mon don't play with me man. he also told me to go to tirminal 3 to change my schdule. but i was so so so worried about my baggage. what if i lose them? i was afraid to think more. i must call my teacher mr.zhang in washburn. but i forgot to write down his cell phone number. i called his office but there was no one picking up the phone because it was weekend. "oh come on, is that the end of the world? what should i do then?" i went to tirminal 3 to change the flight. they told me that i still had time to Kansas City in time! because there was another flight to Dallas that day! geeee... i rushed to the flight, but something really bad happened. i was caught by the securities because i took to much liquid in the bag. they searched me carefully, that's fucking rediculars! they throwed all my face cream face shampoo SPICY JAM lens liquid...fuck that shit i don't deserve this. fuck 'em! i missed the flight to Dallas. i went to the baggage claim in tirminal 3 to see if they can find my baggage. no there was nothing they can do. the 2 black guys told me to go back to tirminal 5 to ask the man there. then i went back to tirminal 5 but the guard didn't allow me to go in to the baggage claim because there was the exit of international passengers nobody can going in. he told me to ask for a hotel voucher. that was new to me. and i went back to tirminal 3 and asked for a $59 hotel room near the airport. no other choices, i went there. the name of the hotel is RAMADA held by some mid americans.

the next morning i took a flight to Kansas City directly, fortunately, my baggage was there with the same flight and Mr. Zhang was at the airport waiting for me. thank god...

昨天交关开心，吾，小燕子，搭子小姚小李四嘎头一道起了聂带风暴，白相到老爱再回来，吃四吃了交关多，但是还是老爽额，落特根航里，伐大开心。

 

前天交关开心， 跟小燕子一道起看了变形金刚，总算看特了，否则一桩心事了嗨总归伐色以额，蛮好看额，就是蛮头浑额。夜到一家门兄弟姐妹吃吃饭嘎嘎山湖，蛮好。

 

大前天交关开心， 高中一帮子宁聚聚，嘎嘎山湖，吃吃火锅，唱唱歌，抄抄CS，个额叫爽啊，经济实惠，就是有点伐大好，要是大家积极性再高点就更佳好，恩。

 

大大前天交关开心，跟小燕子一道起青浦奥特莱斯兜了一串，买了交关东西，安那吉额羽绒衫交关实惠，当3折，原价两千九现在只卖切百块，嗲，信用卡玩具爽。
